Two first-half goals and a late third condemned Portavogie Rangers to a 3–0 defeat against Bloomfield in difficult conditions at New Harbour Road.
Rangers returned to NAFL Division 1C action looking to respond following their Border Regiment Cup exit at Larne Tech OB.
There were three changes to the starting side, with Jake Sloan, Matthew Moore and Ethan Woods replacing Jack Emerson, Thomas Rotherham and Robbie Palmer. Dylan Carlisle continued as captain.
Both teams had to contend with a wet afternoon at New Harbour Road, and the opening stages were keenly contested as Rangers attempted to establish themselves in the game.
Bloomfield began to pose a threat through their direct play and took the lead on 26 minutes.
A long throw from the left was allowed to travel into a crowded penalty area, where the loose ball fell kindly for a visiting attacker. He managed to get beyond the Rangers defence before directing a low finish across Harry Wallace and into the far corner.
Portavogie worked to regain their composure after falling behind, with Dylan Carlisle and Jude Carlisle competing in midfield and Alfie McKee leading the attack.
The visitors continued to apply pressure, however, and Rangers were punished by another long throw four minutes before the interval.
The initial delivery was contested inside the penalty area and the partially cleared ball was collected on the right. Wallace reacted well to block the first effort, but the rebound remained inside the six-yard box and Bloomfield reacted quickest to force it over the line.
Thomas Curry was replaced by Robbie Adair during first-half stoppage time as Rangers went into the interval trailing 2–0.
Portavogie returned for the second half determined to find a route back into the contest, but Bloomfield remained organised and restricted the home side’s opportunities in the final third.
Ben Adair replaced Ethan Woods on 57 minutes as Rangers looked to add fresh energy. Thomas Rotherham then came on for Matthew Moore eight minutes later.
The blue shirts continued to compete despite the difficult position, with captain Carlisle working to drive his side forward and the Rangers defence standing firm against further spells of visiting pressure.
Bloomfield’s two-goal advantage remained intact as the contest entered its closing stages, leaving Portavogie needing a late breakthrough to give themselves hope.
Instead, the visitors added a third goal in the final minute.
A Bloomfield attacker carried the ball through the centre and resisted several challenges before advancing into the penalty area. He then kept his composure to place a low finish beyond Wallace and complete the scoring.
It was a frustrating afternoon for Rangers, who were punished by Bloomfield’s effectiveness around the penalty area and were unable to find the goal required to change the momentum of the contest.
Portavogie must now put the result behind them and turn their attention towards next Saturday’s Division 1C meeting with Shorts at New Harbour Road.
